What new uses of Botox are making headlines?

There is nothing new about Botox injections being used to freeze facial muscles to make people look younger. All over the world, millions of women and me opt for Botox shots to get a more youthful and vibrant look. Application of Botox does enhance skin elasticity and smoothens wrinkles and lines around the eyes and lips to an extent. While the effects do not last forever, on an average it works for 3 months or so after which another shot is needed. This is why so many people from various age groups are opting for Botox shots repeatedly. Many f them swear by its effects on skin and say it woks far better than many expensive anti aging and wrinkle treatment products sold in shops.

However, of late new researches have indicated at alternative usage of Botox and these discoveries have also made headlines. As per the latest finding, Botox can be administered to those people who suffer from excessive perspiration. While sweating is normal for any person, there are some people who sweat profusely and in medical terminology it is called hyperhidrosis. This is known to affect around 3 percent of human population which amounts to roughly 211 million people.

A Consultant Dermatologist Dr Anwar Al Hammadi said hyperhidrosis victims sweat without being affected by external factors. In countries like the UAE where the summer sun is especially relentless, people with sweating problem fare worse. The procedure to treat these patients involves injecting Botox to the most affected areas on the body. Botox reduces sweat secretion by reducing activity of sweat glands, say the doctors who advise the patients to opt for the unusual therapy. Its effect lasts for half a year or so. Dr Ikramullah Al Nasir a noted dermatologist said using two shots of Botox should suffice for any man or woman suffering from excessive sweating.

While hyperhidrosis victims sweat mostly at body parts like armpit, feet and head, there are people who seat profusely everywhere in body which forces them to change clothes 5 times a day or so. A clinical psychologist Dr Tara Wyne said apart from the physical discomfort people sweating heavily also suffer from inferiority complex and develop self esteem. They develop cold feet when attending social events. A lot of them become reclusive and this affects their social life greatly. The efficacy of Botox to treat this condition does not yield equal results in everyone though. It is also necessary to seek this treatment from veteran doctors and reputed clinics to evade risk of side effects. Feeling of temporary pain or stiffness can occur in some people.

In another amazing discovery that has sent waves across the medical community, a link has been found between 2 diabetes and Botox. As per the new study, Botox shots can affect proteins that can be used to treat patients of this medical condition. It affects several million women and men all over the world across diverse age groups.

Botox usually is administered to thaw muscles and tissues to achieve younger looking skin. It has also been used to treat specific medical conditions like urinary incontinence and migraine. In these cases, Botox works by paralyzing muscles in body. However, this is not the case with this type of Diabetes. Instead it works on Soluble NSF Attachment Protein Receptors or SNARE proteins.

In people afflicted with type 2 diabetes, Botox finds SNARE proteins in the pancreas. These are present in the organ’s beta cells which make insulin. Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University’s Dr. Colin Rickman along with his team carried out this path breaking study. They are yet to find out details on how snare proteins react to application of Botox for secretion of insulin. This may help researchers find out ways to stop failure of insulin producing cells, leading to possible treatment and cure for diabetes. Rickman is of the view that the full results of his team’s evaluations will be made available by early 2015. With more extensive and long researches the working fundamentals of the proteins can be traced, believes the team. The Scottish study was sponsored by Edinburgh Super Resolution Imaging Consortium and the Medical Research Council.

Dr Rickman said human body has a glucose storage system and it is released when the body requires energy. This is what insulin secretion controls. With a person growing obese, which is major health concern of recent times, the insulin production system is stressed and eventually fails. This leads to onset of Type 2 diabetes.

The team of Scottish researchers at Heriot-Watt University thinks that they can find the way to prevent and treat diabetes by observing SNARE protein functionality in pancreas and its reactions to Botox application. As a matter of fact, this is the first major study to focus on functionality of SNARE proteins and their role in insulin secretion.

Diabetes continues to be a major health hazard across the world with countries like the UK having a major part of population under its grasp. Last year the NHS said diabetes is among the UK’s serious chronic health menaces. In fact, from 1996 – 2012, number of people afflicted with Diabetes has shot up by as much as 1.5 million in the UK. If a suitable remedy for the menace is not discovered and applied on mass level, it is assumed that population of diabetes afflicted people in the country will reach a staggering 5 million in next one decade.
